Twitter #Hashtags for Nurses

First and foremost, I am a big proponent of nurses using Twitter professionally to amplify the nursing voice. Twitter connects thought leaders in every industry, including healthcare. As nurses, we possess such a unique perspective on patient care, and the world needs to hear it. Twitter is the perfect platform to let this happen. What are #hashtags?

Hashtags are essentially keywords used to categorize Tweets. On Twitter, individuals use the hashtag symbol (#) to detonate an important word. Individuals can then click on the #hash-tagged word and see all other Tweets that include that same keyword. 

For example, I might Tweet, “Over 200 #Pennsylvania #NursePractitioners lobby for full practice authority at the state capital. http://bit.ly/1FBAhUl  #NPsLead.” This Tweet includes three hashtags: Pennsylvania, nurse practitioners, and NPsLead (my personal favorite). If you click on the hashtags, it will take you to a feed of all Tweets that include that word. You can see the actual Tweet here. Pretty cool!
